The hotel sector in Cambodia had a positive year in 2012 and rates and room numbers are set to increase this year and next.
A new report from property agents CBRE says tourism accounted for 9.7 per cent of Cambodia’s GDP in 2012, a rise of 5.5 per cent from 2011. Investment in the tourism sector has increased by 16.7 per cent year on year, and total foreign arrivals increased by a massive 24.8 per cent year on year, with business arrivals seeing the greatest increase, at 47 per cent.
The Phnom Penh luxury hotel market “significantly benefitted from the presence of the ASEAN summits,” in April and November, which CBRE said brought over 1,000 delegates and international press into the city.

On March this year, we heard the Royal group chairman told the Phnom Penh Post that its Royal tower will begin the construction soon. It is quite a big news and this is a much bigger news that the Amarapura will turn Cambodiana hotel into something bigger and quite impressive like in the picture. No doubt, Amarapura must partner with Royal Group to do this projects since Royal Group own the hotel and the land. This is the only photo we've got from Amarapura website. The project cost $93 million. Amarapura slated that "The site is the location of the present Cambodiana Hotel at the confluence of the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers. As such this is one of the great locations for a grand hotel in South East Asia. The 3.5ha site is absolute riverfront and is in the prime cultural and civic centre of Phnom Penh." Amarapura doesn't give much more detail about this projects on its website.
* Cambodiana is a 5-star hotel and it has become the Landmark of Phnom Penh city for its stunning beauty and prime location. The building was designed by a renowned architect of that time Lu Ban Hap .
